Translation and right to left

Kurato is ready for translation, and the whole design mirrors for right-to-left languages such as Arabic and Hebrew.

Set the site language#

Go to Settings > General and choose a Site Language. WordPress, WooCommerce, Elementor, and Contact Form 7 come with their own translations, which WordPress downloads for you. Kurato's own words need a translation file.

Translate the theme and the plugin#

Kurato has two translation templates (.pot files):

FileText domainTranslates
kurato/languages/kurato.potkuratoThe theme: the header, menu, footer, archives, Customizer labels, and messages.
kurato-core/languages/kurato-core.potkurato-coreThe plugin: the sections, projects, widgets, shop extras, and the Kurato screen.

With Loco Translate (no files to move)#

  1. Install and activate the free plugin Loco Translate.
  2. Go to Loco Translate > Themes and click Kurato.
  3. Click New language, pick your language, and choose to save the file in the Custom location, so updates do not remove it.
  4. Translate the words and click Save.
  5. Do the same for Kurato Core under Loco Translate > Plugins.

With Poedit#

  1. Open kurato.pot in Poedit and choose Create New Translation.
  2. Translate, then save. Name the files with your language code, for example kurato-de_DE.po and kurato-de_DE.mo for German.
  3. Upload both files to wp-content/languages/themes/ on your server.
  4. For the plugin, name them kurato-core-de_DE.po and .mo and upload them to wp-content/languages/plugins/.

Files in wp-content/languages/ are kept when you update the theme or the plugin.

A site in several languages#

Kurato works with Polylang and WPML. Both come with wpml-config.xml files, which tell these plugins which fields to translate:

  • Projects, header and footer templates, and the four project lists (types, clients, years, and roles) can be translated.
  • The project subtitle, runtime, format, and camera report are translated. The layout, video, and focal point are copied.
  • The text fields of every section, in both editors.
  • Customizer texts: the runtime column name, the footer lines, the 404 page, and the contact details.

Put the language switcher in the header with the kurato_hud_controls hook, or add the switcher widget to a footer area. Kurato styles the Polylang and WPML switchers in the header, the menu, and the footer.

Right-to-left languages#

When the site language is written right to left, such as Arabic, Hebrew, or Persian, WordPress tells the theme, and Kurato loads its mirrored stylesheets. You do not need to change a setting.

  • The layout, the menu, the filmstrip, the scrubber, and horizontal scroll effects run from right to left.
  • The timecode and numbers that are codes stay left to right.
  • Photographs are never flipped.

You can preview the artist demo mirrored at kurato.jawad.work/artist/?dir=rtl. That address works only on the live demo. On your site, the mirrored design follows the site language.

The bundled fonts have Latin letters only. For Arabic or Hebrew text, the browser uses a system font. For a better match, choose the Custom font pairing and name Google fonts that include your alphabet. See Typography.
