Teo Halvorsen photographs quiet places over long stretches of time. He goes back to the same coast, valley, or ridge for years, and makes a series only when the place has shown him something new.
Three winters on the south and east coasts of Iceland, where the beaches are black and the light changes every ten minutes. The series became my first book.
Most of my work is waiting. I walk to the same place before dawn, set up the tripod, and watch the light do nothing for an hour. Then, for four minutes, the cloud lifts off the ridge, or the tide pulls back off the black sand, and the place shows its real face.
I have learned not to chase that moment. I go back the next day, and the day after, until I know the place well enough to be standing in the right spot when it happens.
