Landscape commissions

Kurato Photographer

14 Years in the field

Landscape commissions for magazines, books, and outdoor brands, made with the same patience as my own series.

The sun rising behind the sharp edge of a sand dune under a clear sky.

I take four or five commissions a year. That leaves time to wait for the light on every one of them.

Most of my commissions come from magazines and outdoor brands. A few come from hotels, architects, and towns that want to be photographed in their best season.

I plan every job like one of my own series. I read the maps, I check the tides and the sun, and when I can, I visit the place once before the shoot. On the day, I am there before first light.

I work alone or with one assistant. That keeps the cost low, and it means the person you speak to on the first call is the person behind the camera.

Four kinds of commission.

Every commission starts with a short call about the place, the season, and the use. Travel and lodging are quoted on top, at cost.

From the people who hired me.

Three recent commissions
  • “We asked Teo to photograph our guesthouse. He came back with the fjord it looks at, and our winter bookings doubled.”

Mari Strand Owner · Utvær Guesthouse
  • “He asked three questions on the first call, and all three were about the weather. That is when we knew he was right for us.”

Jonas Eide Brand manager · Skarv Outdoor Co.
  • “The brief said desert. Teo asked which hour of the day we meant, and then he gave us that hour, every day for six weeks.”

Sigrid Aune Art director · Terrain Quarterly

Questions about commissions.

What clients ask before the first call. Anything else, ask me directly.

  1. How far ahead should I book?

Two to three months for most jobs. For anything in winter, or anything that depends on one short season, write as early as you can.

  2. What happens if the weather is wrong?

We plan one spare day for every three on location. If the weather is still wrong, we move the shoot, and you pay only for the days I worked.

  3. Do you photograph people?

Sometimes, when they are small in a big place. I am not a portrait photographer, and I will tell you if someone else suits the job better.

  4. Who owns the photographs?

I keep the copyright, and you get a license for the use we agree on. Longer or wider use can be added later.

  5. Do you work outside Norway?

Yes. Iceland, the Alps, and the southern deserts so far. I travel by train and ferry when I can.
