After Dark
Personal work · Night sky · 2025 · Frames 9
Nights on the ridges and the shore near home, with the Milky Way, the full moon, and one summer storm. Every frame is a single exposure.
Up here the sky is only dark from September to April, so every clear night counts twice.
I check three weather models before dinner and decide by nine. If the sky looks clear, I drive to the ridge or the shore and walk the last hour with a headlamp on red. Most nights the cloud comes in before midnight and I walk back down with nothing.
Every frame here is one exposure, with no stacking and no sky from another night. The star trail is one frame too: three hours with the shutter open and the camera wrapped in a hat so the lens did not frost.
The storm over the island was the only night in the series that was not planned. I was there for the stars.
“The cold is the easy part. The hard part is driving home at four in the morning with nothing on the card, and going back the next night.”
