Quiet Animals
Mosslight Magazine · Wildlife · 2023 · Frames 9
Four winters in hides and behind the kitchen window, waiting for the animals that share the valley with us. A series made for Mosslight Magazine.
I am not a wildlife photographer. I am just someone who sits still for a long time.
The fox in the snow came to the edge of the garden every morning for three weeks in January 2021. I photographed her from the kitchen window, through glass I had cleaned the night before. She never once looked at the house.
The stags were harder. I built a hide at the edge of the bog and sat in it for most of two autumns. The fog picture was made on the last morning of the second year, ten minutes before I would have gone home.
No animal was baited, called, or followed. If it walked away, I let it.
“The animals in these pictures are not posing. They are simply not bothered, which is a much rarer thing to photograph.”
