Eleven days of fog in the fir valley

Field notes · · 2 min

The fog came early this year. I walked up to the valley eleven mornings in a row and came home with three frames I like.

The fog came early this year. On the second of September the valley behind the town filled up overnight, and it stayed that way for almost two weeks. I walked up eleven mornings in a row.

People ask how many frames I make on a morning like that. The honest answer is very few. Most mornings I set up, watch, and make nothing at all, because the fog is too thick or too even. The pictures happen when it starts to thin and move.

What the fog does at nine

At about nine the sun reaches the top of the east slope. The fog there starts to lift in strands, and for ten minutes the trees come and go. That is the moment I wait for. After that it is just a nice day.

I kept three frames from the eleven days. One of them may join Fog Season next year, if it still looks right in the spring. I have learned not to decide in the same month.

The valley does not care that I am there. That is what I like about it.

From my notebook, day nine

If you want to see the valley yourself, the road starts behind the school in Ravnsund. Go before eight, and bring a flask.
