Nightwater is a festival of light installations, so the titles had one rule: no light we could not explain.

The festival asked for ninety seconds that could play before every screening, then be cut down for the lobby screens and for phones. We built six tunnels of light, each one a single simulation, and let the lineup ride along the walls.

Every streak in the film comes from a real light source in the scene. Nothing was painted in after the render. That made the first week slow and every week after it fast, because a change to one lamp changed every frame in the right way.

00:00:04

Black, then one ring of light. The tunnel builds itself out of the dark.

Pale and amber light trails sweeping in loose curves across a dark frame.
00:00:19

The trails pick up speed. The first names ride on the walls.

Thin orange lines bending across a dark floor toward the horizon.
00:00:41

The floor bends toward the horizon and the music drops to one note.

Red and white light ribbons coiled into a spiral on black.
00:01:02

The coil carries the headline artists, one per turn.

A thick arc of pink and orange light strands bending out of the dark.
00:01:31

The arc closes, and the festival mark lands on the downbeat.

We asked for something people would stay in their seats for. They started filming the screen instead.
