Dry Country
Terrain Quarterly · Landscape · 2022 · Frames 9
The opposite of home: six weeks of sand, sandstone, and salt, photographed for Terrain Quarterly. Most frames were made in the hour after sunrise.
I wanted to see if the way I work at home would hold in a place that is its opposite.
Terrain Quarterly sent me south for an issue about dry places. I asked for six weeks instead of two and slept in the car for most of them.
The light in the desert is hard for about ten hours a day. The good part is short: the hour after sunrise and the half hour before dark. In between I read, slept in the shade, and drove to the next place.
The salt flat was the last stop. A storm came in over the mountains and I had about five minutes before the rain. It was the only rain in six weeks.
“Halvorsen brings northern patience to a southern landscape, and the dunes finally get the slow look they deserve.”
