How a print is made.

  1. Step 01

    Proof

A small proof on the same paper, checked in daylight and under a warm bulb. Most files need two or three rounds.

  2. Step 02

    Print

The final print is made on a twelve-ink printer and left to dry flat for a full day before anyone touches it.

  3. Step 03

    Sign

Signed and numbered on the back in pencil, with a short note about the day the photograph was made.

Wind ripples across golden sand dunes in strong side light.

The wind drew this overnight. By noon it was gone.

Dry Country, No. 2. Ripples, late afternoon. Cotton rag, 70 × 100 cm

“A good print is quiet. You should notice the place first, and the paper never.”
