A three-week residency, a hut with no power, and a sea painter far from the sea.
The Fellside Museum runs a summer residency in a hut above the tree line. I applied because I had never painted a mountain and was a little afraid of them.
Mountains are too big to fit. I spent the first week painting only rocks and water, close up, until the scale made sense.
The Falls was painted on a canvas I rolled up and carried in on my back. It went up the trail in a tube and came down stretched, on a mule.

Rocks and white water, because a whole mountain was too much on the first day.

Up at four to catch the light on the peak before it went flat.

The large canvas, painted over nine days from the same rock.

Plates 05 High Country · 2023

Distance is blue and pale. Near things are warm and dark. Mountains taught me to push that further than I would on the coast, until the far cliffs are almost the color of the sky.

“The best residency work we have shown. She painted the mountain like she was talking to it.”
