Two canvases, prints of No. 1

Five canvases from one winter on the north shore. I painted the first marks on the cliff path and the rest in the studio, before the memory of the noise wore off.

The storms came in from the northeast most weeks between November and March. I walked out with a pochade box, a sheet of primed board, and twenty minutes before my hands stopped working.

None of those boards are in the show. They were notes. The canvases were painted back in the net loft, the same afternoon, with the boards pinned to the wall and the window open so the room stayed cold.

The foam is cold wax mixed into titanium white, laid on with a palette knife and then dragged once with a dry brush.

Canvas 01 · The cliff path

The first canvas set the gray. Everything after it was painted against that one sky.

A wave bursts white over a black rock ledge under a gray sky.
Canvas 03 · The ledge

A wave takes about two seconds to break. I painted the shape it leaves in the eye, not the wave.

A green storm light over a rocky bay, with a pale break in the clouds.
Canvas 05 · Green weather

The last storm of the season came in green. I had one afternoon to get the color down.

Palette notes

Ultramarine, a little burnt umber, and a lot of white. The green in the water is never mixed on the palette. It happens when a wet blue is pulled through a wet yellow ochre.

Hog bristle filberts, 8 to 14

One long trowel, for the foam

How No. 1 was built

Storm Coast, No. 1 · 90 × 140 cm
Gray waves break over dark rocks below a low, heavy sky.
Oil and cold wax on linen · painted November 2025 to March 2026
  1. 01 The sky first

One gray, mixed in a jar and used for the whole series. The sky was painted in a single sitting.

  2. 02 The headland

Scraped back twice with a knife. The third version stayed, because it was the roughest.

  3. 03 Foam

Cold wax and titanium white, laid on with a knife and dragged once with a dry brush.

  4. 04 Dark rocks

Burnt umber and ultramarine, thin. The darks are the only quiet part of the canvas.

“You can hear these paintings. I stood in front of No. 1 and buttoned my coat.”

Ines Calloway, North Quay Gallery
