A cut flower gives you about five days. That is the whole schedule. Each of these paintings was started the morning the flowers came in from the garden.
My neighbor grows roses along the harbor wall, and this summer she let me cut what I wanted. The deal was a small painting at the end of it.
Flowers move. They open, turn to the window, and drop petals in the night. So I paint the center first, while it is fresh, and the leaves last.
The pansies came from a window box on Quay Lane. They were the only flowers that lasted longer than the painting.

The roses were cut at seven and on the table by eight. The first lay-in took the whole morning.

The lilies opened on the third day and changed the whole picture. I let them.

The big rose dropped its first petal on the fifth day, two hours after I finished it.

Pinks are mixed from alizarin and white, never from a tube pink. The pansy petals are a single stroke each, laid down and not touched again.
