From the raw file to the print

Weather Coast, No. 1 · Raw to print · Made in the studio
The same sunset over waves and flat rocks, flat and pale, as the camera recorded it before printing.
Raw file
Waves washing over flat rocks under a red and orange sunset sky.
Print

Contrast and warmth come back in the print. The colors are the ones I saw, never stronger.

I print every photograph myself, in a small studio above the old net loft. The print is where a photograph is finished.

How the night sea was made

After Dark · No. 4 · Low tide, 01:30
The Milky Way over a calm sea with dark boulders and a faint green glow on the horizon.
Full-frame mirrorless · 20 mm · 25 s · f/1.8 · ISO 3200
  1. 01 The core of the Milky Way

In June it stands upright over the sea for about an hour. I planned the trip around that hour.

  2. 02 A green glow

Not the aurora. It is airglow, a faint light high in the air that only a long exposure shows.

  3. 03 Twenty-five seconds of sea

The long exposure turns the small waves into a flat mirror between the rocks.

  4. 04 Light from the town

A village behind me lit the rocks a little. In the print I kept it, so the shore does not go black.

  5. 05 A satellite

Most people ask me to remove it. I leave it in, because it was there.

Where the hours go.

One print, out of 100
  • Waiting for light

Most of the work, and most of the tea.

  • Walking in

Usually in the dark, often uphill.

  • Proofing

Two or three rounds on the final paper.

  • Editing

One select in two hundred frames.

  • Pressing the shutter

A few seconds, in the end.
