Mixing a gray that is not gray

Technique · · 1 min

Why I never use black and white for a storm sky, and the three colors I use instead.

Black and white make a dead gray. It has no temperature, and it sits on the canvas like dust. A storm sky needs a gray that leans one way or the other.

Three colors

I mix my grays from ultramarine, burnt sienna, and white. More blue and it goes cold. More sienna and it goes warm. The same three tubes give me every sky in the Storm Coast series.

Brown storm clouds roll over wooded hills and a far valley.
Storm over the Hills. Every gray in it comes from the same three tubes.

Mix a lot

Mix the sky gray in a jar, not on the palette, and mix more than you need. If you run out halfway, you will never match it again.

  • Ultramarine blue
  • Burnt sienna
  • Titanium white
