Hanging a show in a fishing shed
Exhibitions · · 1 min
North Quay Gallery used to store nets. Here is how five storm paintings went up on its walls.

North Quay Gallery was a fishing shed until twelve years ago. The walls are tarred wood, the floor slopes toward the harbor, and nothing in the room is level.
Five paintings, one wall each
Ines and I hung Storm Coast with one painting per wall, and left the long wall almost empty except for No. 1. A storm painting needs room around it, the same way a storm does.

The light
We turned off half the spots and opened the big door on the harbor side. On a gray afternoon the paintings and the sky outside were the same color. That was the best review the show could have had.
Leave the door open. Let them see the real thing next to it.
