On the coast there are maybe ten days a year with no wind at all. I wait for them.
These three were painted on calm days in the spring of 2023: two at the lakes inland and one at the headland south of town.
A still lake is hard to paint because nothing tells you where the water starts. I keep one small mark, a sail or a rock, to break the mirror.

Plates 03 Still Water · 2023

Palette notes
Soft edges everywhere, except one. The sail in Small Sail is the only hard edge in the whole painting, so the eye goes there first.
- Edges
- Soft, with one hard edge
- Days
- Three windless days
