Decanter and Apples

One table, one north window, and a winter that was too wet to paint outside. Five still lifes came out of it, and a lot of very ripe fruit.

The table is oak and came with the studio. The window faces north, so the light holds steady from ten to three, which is all a still life needs.

I buy the fruit at the Saturday market and paint it fast in the first week, then slowly in the second, when it has started to go soft. The soft fruit is always the better painting.

The Long Table was the last and the largest. I borrowed the silver pitcher from the gallery and returned it with a frame.

A glass decanter of red wine, apples on a plate, and a brass mortar on a white cloth.
Setup 01 · White cloth

The first setup was all whites: a cloth, a plate, and glass. A good test of the window.

A cut melon, peaches, a pear, and grapes on a white cloth with a wine glass.
Setup 03 · The melon

The melon was cut on day one and painted on day one. By day two it had moved.

Grapes, peaches, and a silver pitcher on a table under a dark red curtain.
Setup 05 · The long table

Six weeks, one red curtain, and a borrowed silver pitcher.

A large peach, plums, grapes, and red currants on a stone ledge.

Palette notes

A peach is three colors: a warm yellow under, a cool red over, and a gray bloom on top. Get the gray right and the fruit looks soft enough to bruise.

“You want to take one. That is the highest thing you can say about a painted peach.”
