A three-week residency, a hut with no power, and a sea painter far from the sea.<\/em><\/p>\n\t\n\t\t\t

The Fellside Museum runs a summer residency in a hut above the tree line. I applied because I had never painted a mountain and was a little afraid of them.<\/p>\n

Mountains are too big to fit. I spent the first week painting only rocks and water, close up, until the scale made sense.<\/p>\n

The Falls was painted on a canvas I rolled up and carried in on my back. It went up the trail in a tube and came down stretched, on a mule.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\t<\/section>\n\n\n

    Distance is blue and pale. Near things are warm and dark. Mountains taught me to push that further than I would on the coast, until the far cliffs are almost the color of the sky.<\/em><\/p>\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t
