Five canvases from one winter on the north shore. I painted the first marks on the cliff path and the rest in the studio, before the memory of the noise<\/em> wore off.<\/p>\n\t\n\t\t\t

The storms came in from the northeast most weeks between November and March. I walked out with a pochade box, a sheet of primed board, and twenty minutes before my hands stopped working.<\/p>\n

None of those boards are in the show. They were notes. The canvases were painted back in the net loft, the same afternoon, with the boards pinned to the wall and the window open so the room stayed cold.<\/p>\n

The foam is cold wax mixed into titanium white, laid on with a palette knife and then dragged once with a dry brush.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\t<\/section>\n\n\n

A wave takes about two seconds to break. I painted the shape it leaves in the eye, not the wave.<\/p><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

    Ultramarine, a little burnt umber, and a lot of white. The green in the water is never mixed on the palette. It happens when a wet blue is pulled through a wet yellow ochre.<\/em><\/p>\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

      One gray, mixed in a jar and used for the whole series. The sky was painted in a single sitting.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/li>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

      Scraped back twice with a knife. The third version stayed, because it was the roughest.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/li>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t

      Burnt umber and ultramarine, thin. The darks are the only quiet part of the canvas.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/li>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/ol>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n<\/section>\n\n\n
